The following information is a
recommendation only. The system will run on even older hardware
than what is list below. Naturally any hardware that is faster than what
is listed below will only enhance the performance of the system.
File Server
Pentium II Class or better,
10,000rpm SCSI drive, 256k
memory, Tape Backup with Backup Software, anti-virus software,
Windows2000, NT4.0, NT4.0 Terminal Server, Citrix, Novell, Win95/98.
Note: You may use any computer as a file server. For optimum performance
we recommend any machine that has a 2Ghz processor for your server.
Workstation
Pentium Class or better, 128 memory,
Windows98, Fast Celeron okay. Yes, a Pentium 166 will work but you will
see a performance difference with a Pentium III machine.
Network Hardware
Network Cards - Any compliant full duplex
network card that can run at 100 mps. 3COM & Intel are good choices.
Built in network ports on name brand computers are usually compliant. We
do not recommend wireless because of the amount of data moving. Also
wireless generally runs at 10mps versus 100mps. You can see the
difference.
Switch/Hub - 3COM, Dlink, or Intel 10/100 full
duplex switches usually are a good choice.
Cable - Cat5 must be quality cabling with quality connectors.
Hardware must be compliant "quality". The system is real
time. Millions of hits per user, will create intense network traffic.
Remember the word "compatible" is not the same as
"compliant".
We recommend using the same hardware manufacturer for the hub/switch and
network
cards. The system will be faster with 100mps. Performance would increase
with a "switch" instead of a hub. Cabling is very critical for
the amount files being constantly opened and closed.
Printing
Okidata turbo 320 dot matrix printers or any quality dot matrix
HP Laser & compatibles (no Windows only
printer for faster printing)
(Prints to Windows only and USB printers with external "snapwp"
utility.)
HP Jetdirect Multi-port/Single-port Print Server or compatible
Okidata turbo 320 are "work" tough. They are fast, simple, and
are easy to load. HP’s are just a good standard for general laser printing.
We recommend using a HP Jetdirect type device to connect printers directly
to the network. This allows the user to move printers around without
computers. It also prevents disconnections because the computer gets
turn off.
If you have any machine using NT4.0 /
Windows2000, you can bypass the HP Jetdirect
hardware print server and instead share and map all printers through an
NT4.0 / Windows2000 workstation or server.
Other Software
PcAnywhere for remote access,
PcAnywhere Host on workstations for dial up support. Windows2000
Terminal Services or NT Terminal Server 4.0 for multiple access via DSL
/ Cable from anywhere in the world. Faster access and access via a web
browser with Citrix XPMetaframe and NFuse web portal..
Other Options
Fax invoice, statements,
and anything that prints via computer fax. Must have faxing
software like WinFax or compatible.
