Use only XP Pro for a
business environment or networked environment.
Turn on the the Remote desktop feature and the local
user and administrator account.
Right click on the >Start
button and click on >Properties. Uncheck the
"Group similar taskbar buttons" in the Taskbar
tab.
Click on the "Start
Menu" tab and check the "Classic Start
Menu" Click on >"Customize"
button. Check the "Display Log
Off". Uncheck the "Use Personalized
Menus"
Edit the Performance
Settings in the Advanced tab. Check the
"Adjust for best performance". (Why would
you?) Check the Remote Desktop feature
in the "Remote" tab for administrative work.
Go into the Display
Properties and change the theme to "Windows
Classic". Change the Desktop to
"None". Screen Saver to "None" or to
a non 3D. Appearance should have "Windows Classic
Style" & "Windows
Standard". Search for "*.scr"
screen savers. Delete any "3D" (anything
that moves basically). You can click on the scr
file an it will run.
Fix the "Change the
way users lo on or off" option. Uncheck the
"Use the Welcome Screen" and Uncheck the
"Use Fast User Switching". Also turn off
the "offline file updating" feature.
Turn on the "Guest" Account if sharing printers.
(only in small environment)
Remove all preloaded
software that you will not use in the
"Business" environment. AOL, MS
Money, MM Juke Box, RealPlayer, or any other software that automatically
connects to the internet.
Turn off the Animated
Character when doing a search. Uncheck the option
to "Automatically search for network folders and
printers". Uncheck the "Hide extensions
for known file types"
Uncheck the "Allow
indexing Service to index this disk for fast file
sharing" in the properties of the c: folder.
Disable the Indexing Service all together.
Fix internet explorer
options for safer browsing and a simple common
header. Change the size of the Temp internet
folder to 63megs. Default to google.com. Check the
Prevent pop-up, Set to Block third party cookies,
Turn off auto-complete and password saving. Turn off
auto check for explorer updates, check the Empty
internet temp folder.

Activate Antivirus,
Activate Office, and any other installed
software.
Update any other software
that can be done through the internet.
Copy all standard
shortcuts to the "All" Desktop folder.
Word, Excel, Email, and SNAP-2-IT or other program icons.
Turn off "Quick Launch" on the toolbar.
Switch the "Control
Panel" to view in "Classic" mode.
Turn off in Antivirus checking to any folders that have real-time
database checking. In this case the drive letter associated
with the snap folder on the network and local drive.
Install MS-Antispyware
and turn off Malware real-time checking and let it scan
once at night.
Remove any or turn off
any icons in the system tray.
Load Adobe Reader,
Ad-ware, CCleaner, Tweakui, RegClean, Powerzip.
(professionals only) Check your run registry and remove
any non essential start up programs.
Turn off the option for
hibernation. Do an error check and defrag.
Create a restore point
here. Call it CleanStart1.
Save your Internet
Explorer Settings

If your company has a
domain and you are a mobile user (laptop), you don't
have to create a separate domain login. When you
connect to the domain server it will verify your
credentials. It will be helpful if your user name,
password, and workgoup match the company network.
