Office Workstation Setup

  • Install an anti-virus program only like Norton Anti-virus.  Norton is simple and easy to use.  It's worth paying for.  If you're a smart guy you can download the virus updates yourself for free.

  • Uninstall any software from the Add-Remove control panel that you will not use.  AOL, MS-Money, and Quicken are just a few that may come preloaded on your computer.  Just because it's free doesn't mean you have to keep it around.

  • Update all patches and fixes from http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com before installing or using any application.  If you don't you may experience software and hardware crashes. It's free.

  • Install Adobe Acrobat Reader .  This is a must since many companies use pdf formats for sending documents. It's free.

  • Install Microsoft's "reglean.exe" registry cleaner.  It's free.

  • Install Microsoft's "tweakui" utilities.  They come in handy. It's free.

  • Install some of Microsoft's XP Power Utilities.

  • Install a spware utility like Ad-aware from Lavasoft or Pest Patrol.  I have found Pest Patrol to be worth every penny.

  • Install a spam utility like Mailwaher Pro from Firetrust.  It will help cut down on the spam before you even load it to your local computer. It's worth the money and you will be happier.

  • If you have an XP system turn off the "Fast User Switching" and "Welcome Screen".  There are a lot of programs that will experience problems with the "Fast User Switching".  It is also more secure without the "Welcome" screen for a business.

  • If you have an XP System, right click on the "start" button and go into "properties".  Click the "start menu" tab and check the "classic start menu".

  • If you have an XP system, right click on "My computer" icon, click on the "advanced tab", click on the "settings" button, and check "adjust for best performance".  This removes a lot of graphical things that take processor time and overhead.

  • Remove all the extra buttons from the Explorer Toolbar and leave the basic "stop", "refresh", and "home" buttons.  Then lock the toolbar in place and make Google your home page.

  • Install a popup killer to prevent unwanted windows from being displayed.  Here's a link to a free one Free Surfer.

  • Delete all 3D screen savers.

Tips:  
Remember these computers are for business use not home use.  They should be consistent throughout the company.  They should include the basic things needed to operate your company.  1) The business operations and accounting software. 2) An Office suite like Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. 3) Internet & Email access.  Those three basic things should be standard on all your computers.

Some of these rules are good to follow for most home computers.  Many home computers are being networked just like business computers.  You will find that your home computers will be experiencing the same issues that work computers have once you start networking them.
